After years of requests from fans, Age of Mythology is finally coming back. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Age of Empires series today, Xbox and developer World's Edge held a massive presentation that talked about the future of the franchise. Age of Mythology: Retold is an upcoming game that serves as the Definitive Edition of Age of Mythology. It was revealed on October 25, 2022 and is currently in development. There is no official release date at the moment. In an alignment of the fates, Age of Mythology: Retold’s trailer was released not a day after I started replaying the classic RTS title. While it doesn’t have the same level of following as the Age of Empires series, Age of Mythology is a very enjoyable spinoff with a focus on mythology-themed units. The game introduced god powers and mythical creatures from different mythologies into the game, making for a vastly different experience from its sister games. Recommended Videos As popular as the game was, the fanbase was pretty niche and as such, it never got a sequel or a remake. That is, until now, with the announcement coming out on the 25th anniversary of Age of Empires. From what it says, it looks like Age of Mythology is going to get the Age of Empires treatment as well, with a Definitive Edition coming out soon according to the official Age of Mythology Twitter page. The new edition is going to include everything in the original Age of Mythology and its expansions from the Extended Edition along with updated graphics and tweaks to gameplay to work well with modern system capabilities.

При этом обычный крестьянин занимает один слот, а некоторые мифические создания — до пяти [19]. Для большинства юнитов доступны улучшения, повышающие их характеристики либо же добавляющие новые способности [20].
Всех военных юнитов можно подразделить на семь категорий: пехота , кавалерия , лучники в игре они обобщены как человеческие юниты , осадные орудия , флот , герои и мифические создания [21]. Они взаимодействуют по принципу « камень, ножницы, бумага »: пехота слаба перед лучниками, кавалерия — перед пехотой, а лучники — перед кавалерией, но при этом существует и противопехотная пехота, и кавалерия, эффективная против кавалерии, но нет кавалерии, хорошо сражающейся против пехоты. Такие же правила распространяются и на корабли.
Осадные орудия предназначены для разрушения зданий, но уязвимы перед особым типом кавалерии. Герои используются против мифических существ, назначение которых может быть различно, но в общем случае большинство из них используются против обычных человеческих юнитов, реже для разрушения сооружений [22]. Также герои способны подбирать и переносить реликвии , которые после размещения в храме игрока предоставляют ему определённые бонусы [23].
Главнейшим зданием является городской центр, исполняющий те же функции, что и в других играх Age of Empires — в нём нанимаются все гражданские юниты, кроме рыболовецких лодок, но также он отвечает за переход из одной эпохи в следующую. К тому же городской центр даёт больше единиц населения, чем обычные дома [19]. Особняком стоят фермы, с помощью которых можно добывать пищу, и рынки, на которых можно обменивать ресурсы и покупать караваны.
Названия военных зданий различны у разных фракций, но все они выполняют схожие функции и производят схожих юнитов. Также в военных зданиях могут изучаться усовершенствования для оружия и воинов, повышающие характеристики [19]. Башни и стены выполняют только защитную функцию — юнитов нанимать в них нельзя.
Башни и стены могут модернизироваться, но усовершенствования, изучаемые в них, действуют только на них самих, не затрагивая здания других типов [19]. Помимо этого всем игрокам доступна возможность построить чудо света — уникальное здание каждый игрок может иметь не более одного. Чудо света ничего не производит и требует большого количества ресурсов и времени на возведение.
Существуют режимы игры, где основной целью является постройка чуда, которое, если не дать возможности противникам разрушить его до окончания отсчёта, приносит игроку победу [19]. Кампания, озаглавленная «Падение Трезубца» англ. Fall of the Trident , состоит из 32 миссий [18].
Сценарий игры основан на вольном переложении древнегреческих , древнеегипетских и скандинавских мифов. Сюжет излагается в виде кат-сцен , созданных на движке , показываемых в начале, а также, иногда, в конце миссий.
Классическая компьютерная игра Age of Mythology возвращается в совершенно новом окончательном издании под названием Retold. Despite being so old, the game has continued to remain hugely popular over the years, partially thanks to continued support which extended all the way into 2016.
And while it seemed like a new remaster of AoM might never happen, Xbox has shown today that it has very much been listening to fans. It remains to be seen if Retold can live up to the legacy of the original Age of Mythology, but this announcement is one that a number of RTS enthusiasts are surely ecstatic about.
